Introduction : This study aimed to review early supported discharge (ESD) and its effectiveness, and present the necessity of implementing an ESD service in the reality of domestic stroke rehabilitation medicine healthcare and the direction of occupational therapy approaches in ESD.
Body : The ESD is a system implemented in various countries with advanced stroke rehabilitation medicine healthcare systems, and aims at early transition of rehabilitation and social resource services from the hospital to the community environment. It targets patients with mild to moderate stroke, and these patients receive rehabilitation services similar to those at home after early discharge. Previous studies have reported that ESD is a cost-effective intervention. It has medical effectiveness and reduces personal and social burdens. For patients with mild and moderate stroke can return home and to the community continuously receive rehabilitation treatment through hospital admission, ESD can be a rehabilitation healthcare model for efficient use of resources and establishment of rehabilitation medicine healthcare delivery systems.
Conclusion : Pilot projects of ESD suitable for domestic rehabilitation medicine healthcare and studies to verify its effectiveness through these projects will be needed. In addition, it is suggested that discussions on academic and policy efforts for domestic home-visit occupational therapy service, which is currently not established due to institutional deficiencies, be activated.
